Statement of the Armenian Center for Civil Initiatives on the occasion of events of 1 and 2 March in

In the end of February – beginning of March 2008, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the terrorist Armenian Pan-National Movement (APM) organization as well as several smaller extremist parties and criminal gangs, attempted an armed coup d'etat in Armenia. As a result of manipulations and deception casualties occurred among police and civil population. The capital city suffered significant material damage, while Armenia's image at international stage had demised irreparably.

This is the second attempt of armed highjacking of power led by Ter-Petrosyan and his terrorist APM. The first attempt took place after 1996 Presidential elections lost by Ter-Petrosyan, when he shed Armenian blood for President's office. The analysis of the events of 1996 and 2008 does not leave any doubts that committing gravest crimes against the state, Ter-Petrosyan and the APM were carrying out orders from external anti-Armenian circles, whose ultimate goal is the final elimination of the Armenian statehood.

The re-occurrence of an attempt to coup d'etat in 2008 became possible because the crimes of Ter-Petrosyan and his APM had not been properly investigated and given due political and legal judgment by the Armenian leadership and political parties.

As Armenian citizens, we call upon the Government to take all necessary measures provided under the law to bring to justice the state criminals Levon Ter-Petrosyan and the APM. They should be tried and held responsible for all their crimes.

We also call upon our compatriots, irrespective of their political affiliations. Remember the Armenian history: when, under what circumstances and how the Armenian lands and statehood were lost. The people who show no respect towards their own state are doomed to lose it over again. This time forever.
